I woke with a start. The first thing that registered in my half-sleep brain was the noise of a glass breaking. I opened my eyes slowly, trying to make sense of the surroundings. There was a pin-drop silence in the house, and it was impossible to figure out if someone was trying to break in. Adrenaline started coursing through my veins as my body prepared to fight the imaginary intruder. I gingerly got up and looked around for something solid to defend myself. My eyes fell on the heavyset night lamp, an ideal choice to knock down an average person. I picked it up and softly walked out of the bedroom.
Slowly I searched the whole house and checked all windows. There was no one to be seen anywhere, and all the glass windows were intact. I relaxed and tried to remember the noise that woke me up. It was indeed something breaking, but what and where? Puzzled, I went into the kitchen and had a glass of water. It was probably a dream, I thought to myself. Now was a good time to go back to sleep. Walking towards the bedroom, I saw silver moonlight falling beautifully on the balcony. I had never seen such a sight in my house, probably because I was never awake this late. Feeling curious, I drew the curtains and stepped out into a different world.
A majestic moon filled the sky, and all the stars had paled in comparison. I was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the full moon, and it felt like someone had put a spell on me. As I was soaking in the scenery, the dream came to me in absolute clarity.
I was standing at the edge of a cave. There was a waterfall with a full moon hanging in the sky. It felt like my heart and moon were the same. Suddenly the moon broke into a million pieces, and I felt the same in my chest. Before I could comprehend what had happened, the scene changed, and I was falling into a dark abyss. All I could feel was an immense sense of loss, and a deep sadness permeated every atom of my body. I woke up just as I was about to hit bottom.
Tears fell down my eyes as I relived the dream. At that moment, I wished the moon in front of me could replace my broken heart. But it hung in the sky, the only source of warmth in the cold night.
